Frequently Asked Questions:
How Can I Volunteer at the Shelter?
Shelter volunteers are important members of the HSCC team who work to improve the lives of animals living at the shelter and support the staff. Here are the available shelter volunteer assignments:

GREETER/MATCHMAKER
Greet visitors to our shelter, provide information about animals available for adoption, and take the animals out of the kennels or cages for them. Helping a client find their "perfect match" is important and rewarding!

CAT CUDDLER
By paying special attention to the cats in our care, you can help reduce their stress and keep them properly socialized. By grooming, playing, and spending time with our cats you will help make their lives at the shelter better and improve their chances of adoption.

DOG WALKER
Help our dogs reduce stress and get the exercise they need by walking them. Dog walkers can also play an important role in teaching our dogs basic leash manners and commands, which will be a bonus for potential adopters. The dogs love the one-on-one attention.

PLAY TIME COORDINATOR
By supervising one or two dogs at a time the play yard, volunteers provide dogs with the exercise and individualized attention they need. Time in the play yard provides dogs with much-needed relief from the constraints of kennel life.
What Requirements are there to Volunteer at the Shelter?
Adult Volunteers are individuals 18 and older. Junior Volunteers will be accepted at 14 years of age. Junior volunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The Shelter Volunteer Coordinator can help you determine what volunteer assignments are best suited for you preferences and abilities.
It only takes three simple steps to become a Shelter Volunteer:1.
Contact the Shelter to express your interest in volunteering and discuss your interests, talents, and time availability. Contact HSCC staff at 912-729-7141 or hscc@tds.net.
2.
Attend a Shelter Volunteer Orientation. The Shelter Volunteer Coordinator hosts regular orientations for all new volunteers. This 45 minute meeting provides a tour of the shelter, overview of volunteer positions, and basic information about the HSCC’s policies and procedures.
3.
Complete an application and sign a release, which must be notarized. You can find a notary at most banks, mail-box shops (e.g., UPS, Mail n’ More, etc.), copy services, private individuals, or local businesses identified under "Notary" in online and telephone directories. The Shelter Volunteer Coordinator is a notary, and may notarize your paperwork at a Shelter Volunteer Orientation.
When Can I Volunteer at the Shelter?Volunteers will be asked to schedule their shifts during shelter hours according to their availability.
Please note that the shelter cannot accommodate unexpected or unscheduled groups of volunteers from clubs, churches, or other organizations. We welcome all willing volunteers and the Shelter Volunteer Coordinator must be informed about your interest in volunteering in advance so that we can schedule your visit and ensure you enjoy the best experience possible working at the shelter.
Can I Volunteer for Fundraising & Event Volunteers?Volunteers are regularly needed to help staff coin drops and other fundraising activities throughout the year. To volunteer with fundraising or at events, contact board member Jim Caskey at 912-882-8508 or caskey1@tds.net
Can I Foster a Shelter Animal?Foster volunteers temporarily care for HSCC animals that need a break from the shelter environment because they are being treated for illness, are recuperating from a medical procedure, or have a young litter. The animals stay in the home of the foster volunteers until they are well enough to return to the shelter. This can be a very rewarding way to make a difference in the lives of shelter animals in special circumstances.
